Iowa Western Community College, Council Bluffs, Iowa
Today I'm at the ARt Center. It's a beehive! Here's a quick tour.
Keokuk, Iowa
Yes, it's my favorite stop of the tour. I won't even TELL you how many pancakes I had. Here are a few videos:

En route... in the DV RV
I'm in my office on wheels this month, going from town to town with the exhibit. I'm doing some blogging, too, so click on the blog button (at left) and you can catch up with what I've been hearing and seeing. This morning, you get to hear the gigantic flock of birds that kept me from stepping outside for a minute! Here's the video.
Southwestern Community College, Creston, Iowa
Well, it's my video debut! I grabbed a volunteer and we did a three-part video tour of the exhibit. Here's Part One, then Part Two, then here's Part Three. Tonight there's a reception at 6 pm, and tomorrow we'll have more students and more stories.
Sioux City, Iowa
Take a look! Here's some video from the first stop on this month's tour. First, a look at how we set up the exhibit.

Then, take a look at one of my favorite TV reporters shooting a segment for her story on the exhibit. You can see Quilt #1 in the video! And enjoy the mall music...

Here's the link to see the final video of the news story (oh, my hair!) and here's the link to the print story on the KCAU-TV website.

Click here to see all the videos so far. More to come!
April exhibit: Sioux Center
The 31 'traveling exhibit' made its debut in Sioux Center, Iowa, at a weekend women's retreat at the New Life Reformed Church. The 'Women of God' event was a fundraiser for The Bridge transitional housing project in Orange City.

Conference attendees were able to look at the '31' exhibit during breaks between speakers.
April exhibit: Sioux Center
The exhibit included portraits, an excerpt of each woman's story, and a slideshow with the 31 portraits and photos of other people looking at the exhibits.
March exhibit: Des Moines
The full '31' exhibit--and many of the original women--spent the day in the Rotunda of the Iowa Capitol building to remind legislators of the important funding bill in session.

Making contact
Throughout the day, legislators passed the '31' women as they made their way between legislative chambers and conference rooms.
March exhibit: Des Moines Capitol building
Traffic surged when caucus meetings ended and legislators flowed out into the halls.
At Photo Camp
I spent a week in January at the Julia Dean photo school in Venice Beach. A tough assignment. Here's one session with one of the models; we're learning about lighting.
January photo camp: Venice Beach
We spent this twilight at the beach, working on lighting. We photographed people who were on the boardwalk with their friends (and snakes).
Photo camp: Venice Beach
Venice Beach has a good variety of characters to photograph on the boardwalk. You don't find street pianists just anywhere.
Photo Tour: Ottumwa
The photo exhibit at Indian Hills Community College in Ottumwa was in a student lounge next to the library... which used to be a church. The window design replicates the stained glass pattern and gave the exhibit area beautiful light.
Photo Tour: Ottumwa
Instructors made the photo exhibit part of the curriculum for classes including psychology, human relations, marriage and family, and American literature.

Perhaps the exhibit started some conversations.

The student lounge with the photo exhibit at Indian Hills Community College was at a crossroads between cafeteria, library (a former chapel), classrooms, and dormitories.

Reading the text on the photos is an individual experience.

Photo tour: Forest City
Randy Benson, husband of survivor Barb Benson (one of the "31" project voices), pitched in to set up the exhibit at Waldorf in Forest City.
Photo Tour: Forest City
While easels are being set up, I start getting the photos out of the heavy storage boxes.
Photo Tour: Forest City
Nicole, Barb, and I spent time placing the easels in a nice arrangement around the exhibit space at Waldorf College.

When the easels are ready, the photos start to get placed.
Photo Tour: Forest City
Nicole got posters ready and put them around the school.
Photo Tour: Forest City
My "crew" ran back and forth to the photos to hang up the small boards with story exerpts. I knew all the names of the women in the photos, so I got to just stand there and hand out the story boards.
Photo Tour: Forest City
I was interviewed by Bob Link of the Globe-Gazette. We found these quiet seats near the exhibit.

Photo Tour: Council Bluffs
The portrait of Leah Versteegh greeted students at the door of the student lounge of Iowa Western Community College.

Yes, I actually do some work! Every location has a totally different layout, different lighting, traffic flow, and surroundings. Setting up and choosing the flow of easels is half the fun. The other half is using my power drill to re-assemble the compact easels made by a generous volunteer.
Photo Tour: Council Bluffs
That's a lot of easels. When they're folded up and strapped together in bundles, they make four tidy logs that fit into a locker in my RV. Perfect!
Photo Tour: Council Bluffs
Even without the photos, the re-assembled easels look fantastic (especially if you've spent an hour crawling around the floor with a power drill).

Students and staff at Iowa Western Community College viewed the "Iowa Voices" photo exhibit in the student center.

Photo Tour: Creston
I was so busy talking to people at the exhibit in Creston I forgot to take any photos until it was time to pack up. Mairin Cannon, an AmeriCorps worker at the Creston shelter, helped me set up, talk to people--Creston was the busiest show so far, it was great--and then helped me put everything back in my RV. Thanks Mairin!
"Iowa Voices" project in Keokuk
Every location has a unique arrangement of the photos and their handmade easels. In Keokuk, we were in the River City Mall, down the hall from the popular annual BPW Pancake Day. The photos of the 31 women in the Voices Project--especially this one of Michelle Griffieon--welcomed all visitors to come and take a look.

Elia Cardenas, one of the 31 women of the Iowa Voices Project, stood patiently waiting for lighting and camera adjustments during the film shoot.

One by one, we had individual shoots after the group shot. Once the director got the lights right, we went through our lines.

Shooting The Commercial
Sarabeth Anderson and Adam Stark of ICADV (the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence) work behind the scenes to make things like the TV commercial happen. The commercial, a public service announcement, is now available for use by TV stations statewide.
Shooting The TV Commercial
While the other survivors stood in line, practicing their lines, the film crew got the lighting adjusted and ready to start.

The show at DMACC on Oct 3 was a great success. The photos were displayed around a student commons and there was a lot of foot traffic throughout the day. Great day!
Shooting photos in Egypt
I just flew back from Cairo, and boy my arms are tired... Anyway, Egypt was fascinating. I was lucky enough to be able to tour a major shipping port, Damietta, on the Mediterranean. Look for photos in the 2009 Commodity Calendar. (photo of KT by Mostafa Shatta)

Photo time at the annual domestic violence fundraiser (theme: "It's About Time"). Here I am with Laurie Schipper, Executive Director of the Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence, my non-profit partner on the Iowa Voices project.
Brazil photo shoot
Here I am, crossing my fingers before an aerial photo shoot in Brazil in 2007. The pilot said next time we can remove the window so I can lean out more.
Crooks Gun Club

New York City, June 2007
It was a zoo at the enormous annual book event, BookExpo America, and great fun signing books.
USDA report lock-up
The USDA keeps security high when it's time to release the big report results. I got to go in and get locked in with the rest of the USDA team in August 2007.
